The only thing worse than food poisoning on vacation is food poisoning on an airplane. Glad you recovered quickly...and that you can laugh about it now!

Thanks Jodi! I agree, at least it didn't hit on the flight home!

Ahhh I once ate bad fish the evening before an early morning flight (with layover). I spent the entire night going from bed to toilet and back. I couldn't hold water down either so ultimately I spent the entire trip took about 8 hours dehydrated and exhausted but pleased I could contain my bodily fluids within me for that duration. What made it all extra fun was the fact that I was flying to Greece to try and rekindle an old romance. It didn't really work out well.

Gosh that sounds horrendous Jane!

I don’t want to “like” the post -- it’s more like a “care” button here, although I will say that I enjoy at least the way you wrote about the experience. The petering out of food poisoning, British self deprecation, and “canal view” hotel scamming we’ve all had....these are intriguing elements of the writing itself. Happy you made it through, Tom!

I'm going to Venice tomorrow. I'll be very careful about where I choose to eat fish!

Oh, sympathy! I had a dodgy carbonara in Venice last year which I took two bites of and promptly sent back to the kitchen. When they still wanted to charge the full price I threatened them with a bad review on Trip Advisor. It worked! Actually finding things to eat in Venice wasn't easy as I'm not so into the three Ps — pasta, pizza and panini. Ended up most nights having antopasto at my airbnb writing garret tucked among the rooftops near Santi Apostoli Church.

Oh this sounds like a nightmare! Glad you escaped without paying the full price though.

Daaamn, that’s nasty. I’m sorry it happened to you. Did you do anything to help it pass quicker or did it just go away on its own? Food poisoning is a very baffling affliction, in my experience.

Just went away on its own eventually! I suppose at a certain point I was just...empty!

Ouch. Fishy fish is not a good sign. But it's okay, we've all thrown up in Venice (in or around a canal). Have you thought of sanitising the fish with grappa?

Absolutely should have chased it with a grappa! Maybe I'd have survived it then.

Been there, done that. But not in Venice! Oh man oh man oh man.

Tom, this sounds horrific but I’m glad you wrote about it and found some humour in it! I had something very similar after a trip to Nepal (during which I was determined to eat Nepalese food while the friend I was travelling with ate burgers and pizza everywhere we went - guess who ended up better off?) but luckily it waited until I was back home before it kicked in. Not sure how I’d have coped with the flight back if it had started while we were still there… doesn’t bear thinking about.

Oh gosh, I think that might come close to being pretty much as bad as food poisoning!
