A) the Alps are amazing, though I'm not sure I could handle a full winter there. And I really really need to get a pair of noise cancelling headphones. Lovely interview with a great travel writer.

Noise-canceling headphones are life changing! The only downside is now I have a hard time getting comfortable on planes without them...

And fair re: Alpine winter. I grew up without harsh winters, so I still romanticize them a bit. The reality would probably be very different from my dreams of sparkling white snowdrifts 🤣

Thanks Michael, so glad you enjoyed! I also need to get on the noise-cancelling headphones train!

Samantha, great answer on how to decide your next trip. Once we know it's impossible to visit the whole world, we need to develop some techniques. In my case, I choose based on: distance, price, if it needs visa or not, but there are some unpredictable things such as a friend's invitation, a rare flight fare discount and even an abruptly desire after reading something spetacular about the destination.

All very practical considerations! I actually think when we take that sort of approach--going wherever makes the most sense at the time as opposed to our "dream destinations"--we're more likely to discover interesting places that weren't necessarily on our radar (and we're less likely to be let down because we've built a place up in our head!).

Reading something about somewhere is a big pull for me too - I'm going to Morocco mainly because of books!

Thank you for the interview! I already subscribed to Caravanserai, and now I discover that me and Samantha we travel in the same way.

😊 I think the one difference in how we travel is my pictures aren't quite as good as yours, Flavio!

Such a fun interview. And I just have to say, Sam, if you’re eyeing Istanbul, do it. One of my favourite trips ever.

Yes!! I have heard nothing but the most amazing things about it. With so many good deals on nonstop flights from Amman I have no excuse not to go very soon! Let me know if you have any recommendations 😊

Bourdain is an inspired choice—fearless but smart, both essential qualities in a companion. We’ve done the long Swiss interlude twice now, and it is definitely the place to ratchet down for a winter or summer (we have an article coming out shortly, as luck would have it). Great answers to a cool series. And the trick for us isn’t bringing the headsets, but remembering to charge them!!!

lol @ your last point--I have been caught a couple times with uncharged noise-canceling headphones, and it's no good at all!

Completely agree with Anthony Bourdain - such a good choice! And yes! My headphones are perennially low on battery.
